What is layer 3 switches?

Layer 3 switches perform the functions of both a switch and a router. They switch traffic within a local network (like a regular switch) but can also route packets between different networks using IP addresses. They are commonly used in enterprise networks to improve performance by reducing latency and offloading routing tasks from the core router. They operate at the network layer (Layer 3) of the OSI model.
