What is IED?
An Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is a microprocessor-based controller of power system equipment, such as circuit breakers, transformers and capacitor banks. IEDs receive data from sensors and power equipment, and issue control commands, such as opening circuit breakers if they sense dangerous conditions. They automate tasks in substations and improve power system reliability and efficiency. Common applications include protection, control, monitoring, and automated substation functions.
