What is GRE?

Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) is a tunneling protocol developed by Cisco Systems that can encapsulate a wide variety of network layer protocols inside virtual point-to-point links over an Internet Protocol network. It is commonly used to create VPNs or to transport non-IP protocols over IP networks. GRE is often used in conjunction with IPsec to provide secure VPN connections.
