What is functional MRI?

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a noninvasive neuroimaging procedure that uses MRI technology to measure brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow. It relies on the principle that cerebral blood flow and neuronal activation are coupled. When an area of the brain is in use, blood flow to that region also increases. fMRI is commonly used for research purposes to understand brain function, to diagnose brain disorders, and to plan for surgery and other medical treatments.
