What is Fourier transforms?

A Fourier transform decomposes a function of time (a signal) into the frequencies that make it up, similar to how a musical chord can be decomposed into its constituent notes. It's used extensively in signal processing, image analysis, and solving differential equations. In essence, it converts a signal from its original domain (often time or space) to a representation in the frequency domain.
