What is EU AI Act?

The EU AI Act is a proposed regulation by the European Commission that aims to establish a legal framework for artificial intelligence (AI) within the European Union. It categorizes AI systems based on risk, prohibiting unacceptable-risk AI (e.g., systems that manipulate human behavior) and imposing strict requirements on high-risk AI (e.g., AI used in critical infrastructure, education, employment, and law enforcement) concerning transparency, data governance, and human oversight. Its primary goal is to foster trustworthy AI, protect fundamental rights and safety, and promote innovation across the EU. It intends to regulate the providers and users of AI systems within the EU, as well as AI systems that affect people located in the EU, regardless of where the provider is based.
