What is EMR/EHR systems?

EMR/EHR systems are Electronic Medical Records (EMR) or Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems. These are digital versions of a patient's chart. EMRs/EHRs make patient information available instantly and securely to authorized users. They are commonly used by healthcare providers to manage patient medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization dates, allergies, radiology images, and lab and test results. They also facilitate automation and streamlining of workflows related to billing, inventory management, and regulatory reporting. EHRs go beyond standard clinical data collected in the provider’s office and are built to share information with other healthcare providers and organizations – such as laboratories, specialists, medical imaging facilities, pharmacies, emergency facilities, and school and workplace clinics – so they contain information from all clinicians involved in a patient’s care.
