What is electric arc?

An electric arc, or arc discharge, is a luminous electrical discharge formed between two electrodes through a gas, producing a continuous plasma. Electric arcs are used in a variety of applications, including welding, cutting, lighting (arc lamps), and plasma torches. They are generated by applying a high voltage between two conductors separated by a gas, which ionizes the gas and creates a conductive path for current to flow.
