What is DTO?

DTO stands for Data Transfer Object. It's a design pattern used to transfer data between software application subsystems. DTOs are often used to reduce the number of calls needed when interacting with remote interfaces, like Enterprise JavaBeans. By encapsulating multiple data elements into a single object, the number of remote calls is reduced, improving performance. They are simple objects with no logic beyond storing and retrieving data, and are often used in conjunction with data access objects (DAOs).
