What is Directory?

In computing, a directory (or folder) is a file system cataloging structure which contains references to other computer files, and possibly other directories. On many computers, directories are known as folders, or drawers analogous to a physical filing cabinet. Directories are used to organize files hierarchically, making it easier to locate and manage them. They are fundamental to how operating systems structure and access data.
