A Distributed Control System (DCS) is a computerized control system for a plant or process with many control loops, in which autonomous controllers are distributed throughout the system, but there is central operator supervisory control. This contrasts with non-distributed control systems, such as those that use a central controller. DCS systems are used in a wide array of industries, to monitor and control distributed equipment. Examples include chemical plants, petrochemical plants, oil refineries, pulp and paper mills, power generation facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and beverage processing, mining, and wastewater treatment.
