What is cryptography?

Cryptography is the practice and study of techniques for secure communication in the presence of adversaries. More generally, cryptography is about constructing and analyzing protocols that prevent third parties or the public from reading private messages. It is commonly used to protect data confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and non-repudiation in various applications such as secure websites (HTTPS), email encryption, digital signatures, and blockchain technologies.
