What is cross-compilation?

Cross-compilation is the process of compiling source code on one platform (the host) to create an executable for a different platform (the target). This is commonly used when the target platform has limited resources, is embedded, or is otherwise unsuitable for running a full development environment. For example, you might cross-compile code on a powerful desktop computer (host) to run on a small microcontroller (target).
