What is COMPAS?

COMPAS (Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions) is a risk assessment tool used by US courts to predict the likelihood of a defendant re-offending. It is a proprietary algorithm developed by Northpointe (now Equivant). The tool uses a questionnaire to assess defendants and generates risk scores, which can then influence decisions regarding bail, sentencing, and parole.
