Client/server architecture is a distributed application structure that partitions tasks or workloads between the providers of a resource or service, called servers, and service requesters, called clients. Clients and servers often operate over a computer network on separate hardware. A server machine is a high-performance host that runs one or more server programs which share its resources with clients. A client usually doesn't share any of its resources, but requests content or service from a server. Clients, therefore, initiate communication sessions with servers which await incoming requests. Examples include web browsers (clients) requesting web pages from web servers, email clients retrieving emails from mail servers, and database applications accessing data from database servers.
