Building management systems (BMS), also known as building automation systems (BAS), are computer-based control systems installed in buildings that control and monitor the building's mechanical and electrical equipment such as ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, power systems, fire systems, and security systems. A BMS typically consists of software and hardware; the software program, usually configured in a hierarchical manner, can be proprietary, using such standard protocols as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks. Building management is commonly used to increase energy efficiency, improve occupant comfort and safety, and reduce operational costs.
