What is BOOTP?

BOOTP (Bootstrap Protocol) is a network protocol used by a network client to obtain an IP address from a configuration server. BOOTP allows a diskless workstation to discover its own IP address, the IP address of a BOOTP server, and a boot file to be loaded into memory to boot the machine. It is commonly used to automatically assign IP addresses to devices during network startup or when DHCP is not available or suitable.
