Autoconf is a tool for producing shell scripts that automatically configure software source code packages to adapt to many kinds of UNIX-like systems. It produces a configuration script from a template file that lists the system features the package can use, in the form of M4 macro calls. The generated script then tests for these features and defines corresponding variables.
