What is Apex?

Apex is a proprietary, strongly-typed, object-oriented programming language developed by Salesforce.com. It is used to execute flow and transaction control statements on the Salesforce platform, in conjunction with calls to the Salesforce.com API. It allows developers to add business logic to system events, such as button clicks, related record updates, and Visualforce pages. Apex is similar to Java and C# and is stored and executed on the Salesforce multi-tenant platform.
