What is AM?

Amplitude modulation (AM) is a type of modulation technique used in electronic communication, most commonly for transmitting radio signals. In AM, the amplitude (strength) of a carrier wave is varied in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal (e.g., an audio signal). AM is widely used in broadcasting (especially for talk radio), aviation radio, and two-way radio communications.
